Call for Engagement in the APM

Text to send to Director and OPLs

Dear colleagues

Following tradition, this APM provides several different opportunities for participants to share, learn, reflect, connect, plan and generally come together.

Alongside the main programme of organised events, we look for contributions from staff - individually and in teams or themes - for any of the following sessions.

Please circulate this as needed within your teams, with a request that they pay attention to the deadlines.

For the marketplace, we will invite some external collaborators and partners from Ethiopia to join us. Please send Peter Ballantyne (p.ballantyne@cgiar.org) contact information for any people you particularly work with who might be interested to have a stand or just join the event.

1. Posters

A poster session will run throughout the Board and APM sessions, from Sunday 11 to Saturday 17 April. It also forms part of the Marketplace on Friday afternoon, 16 April. We have space for some 30-35 posters.

We look for posters that reflect or report on any aspect of ILRI's work, with a particular focus on the overall APM agenda that explores different dimensions of so-called livestock 'goods' and bads' - what they are, the effects they may have, and particularly any ways the 'bads' might be mitigated or avoided.

Please let us know if you want to submit a poster. Send poster title and author information (and cost center for printing purposes) to Meron Mulatu (m.mulatu@cgiar.org), as soon as possible.

Your poster should be in A0 format; it should follow the template available on the APM page on the ILRInet (http://ilrinet.ilri.cgiar.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3585&Itemid=740). Simply download the template and add your content. If you need design assistance, please call on Apollo (ADDIS) or Eric (NAIROBI). The deadline to send digital versions of your poster to Eric Ouma or Apollo Habtamu is 31 March. As well as producing hard copies for APM, we will publish all APM posters on our slideshare account (www.slideshare.net/ilri) that reaches beyond ILRI.

2. Brown-bag Lunch Meetings

From Thursday to Saturday during the APM, we have up to 4 parallel 'brown-bag' lunch spaces available (12 in all). We welcome applications from anyone interested in holding a small meeting with colleagues during the lunch period (approximately 60 minutes). We provide the meeting space and a packed lunch. You organize the agenda and the process.

If you want to organize such a meeting, send an email to Meron Mulatu (m.mulatu@cgiar.org) before 19 March. We need to know: - title of your meeting - who is organizing it (name and email address) - expected number of participants - 100 word introduction to your session, its aims and objectives - sufficient to inform colleagues who may wish to join.

3. Marketplace Stand

We will hold a 'marketplace' in the afternoon of Friday 16 April. The marketplace will be visited by APM participants, Addis staff, staff of hosted centers on the Addis campus, and external partners and organizations that we work with (including local representatives from Government, funders, etc.)

We hope that each 'unit' at ILRI will organize a small stand/display that introduces and showcases its work. Thus:

- each theme (Biotech, Markets, PLE) - each cross-cutting programme (P&G; Sustainable Futures) - P&C - HR, finance, operations - SLP - BecA - IPMS - Collective Action - Research Support (GIS, RMG, etc)

If your project/theme/cluster wants to organize a specific stand, please let us know. Stands could include interactive displays, posters, handouts etc. They need to be well staffed to maximise interaction with visitors and other staff. Book your stand by sending an email to Meron Mulatu (m.mulatu@cgiar.org) before 19 March.

Many thanks for your cooperation

Alan Duncan, Chair APM 2010 Organizing Committee

Text to send to external partners and host institutions to exhibit at the marketplace:

Dear ....

Exhibit at the ILRI Marketplace, Addis Ababa, 16 April 2010.

Between 12 and 17 April this year, The Board and staff of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) will hold their Annual Programme Meetings here in Addis Ababa.

We will reflect on recent global debates, in Copenhagen and elsewhere, that have questioned the world's enthusiasm for livestock and livestock products. We will focus on the positive and negative roles of livestock, examining the 'goods' and the 'bads' and the difficult tradeoffs that are needed to ensure that livestock can indeed be pathways out of poverty and not just polluters of the planet! Such discussions are of course particularly relevant here in Ethiopia where livestock are part of the daily fabric of life all around us.

As part of these meetings, we will organise a 'marketplace' - comprising small exhibition spaces - where we and our partners will present and showcase some of the many activities we engage in. It is an informal and lively event that we expect will attract some 300 or so people from the 'agricultural' development community in Addis Ababa and beyond.

I am writing to invite your organization to join us by organizing a small stand that showcases your work on agriculture, rural development and livestock.

We will be pleased to make available necessary facilities and to welcome you on the ILRI campus. You and your nominated colleagues will of course be free to participate in the other elements of the marketplace, such as debates and workshops, and we hope you and we will benefit from the opportunity to renew old contacts, meet new partners, and generally forge stronger collaborations.

If you would like to join us, can you please:

1. send an email expressing interest in organizing a stand to Ms. Meron Mulatu (m.mulatu@cgiar.org), as soon as possible. She will inform you of logistical aspects. 2. register the names of up to three people from your organization who expect to attend: Follow the link at http://ilrimarketplace.eventbrite.com/, before 2 April if possible.

Yours Sincerely

Bruce Scott / Carlos Sere
