Livestock Bads and Goods: Questions and Answers Thursday 15 April, 15:30 - 16:45.

#ObjectiveObjective It is a lot for such a large group but if we limit our ambition for this session to getting lots of participation and discussion and questioning (that will likely continue after the session), and some interesting group views ‘documented’, we will probably be doing ok.

For the 60 minutes Thursday after lunch session, we aim to spread discussion across the room, sourcing questions and sharing answers (with a group of some 150 people, maybe more). We can think of this as a journalists briefing session, with a twist:
The scenario is:
- immediately after lunch, participants are asked to cluster or huddle in approx 10-12 groups (12 or so people to a group) . we will have small tables that can act as cluster points, but not enough to all sit around.
- each group of participants is a ‘group’ of reporters/journalists from a newspaper or journal or tv programme (science, nature, new scientist, economist, DAILY NATION, NATIONAL ENQUIRER, 6 O’CLOCK NEWS, LOCAL KENYAN RADIO STATION).
- they have to IMAGINE THEY ARE A TEAM ASKED TO PRODUCE a ‘front’ page leader story for their NEWS OUTLET on livestock goods and bads (but this is not the output of the session).
- They have heard the ‘experts’ in the morning.
The actual process:
1. Question Identification - discuss what they heard and quickly identify the most significant issue/angle they want to lead on with their article [they need to focus on an area of goods or bads] - the main assignment is identify and pose the main question they want to be answered by the panel of experts
The experts sit on tables initially and LISTEN so they can be a little prepared when they later have to provide answers…
2. Question posing - each group/table is asked to discuss what they heard and then pose their ONE top question to plenary. No clarifications, no answers - each question is assigned to one of the experts
3. Answer discussing - an exper joins each table and answers or facilitates the finding of answers, as best he/she can, the question posed by the group - someone in each group collates the question and the answer(s) and discussion points and prepares to document the discussion (basically be interviewed by someone else).
4. documentation - we capture the question and the answer from each table as either 1) a short video blip and/or 2) a short blog post. All will be online by the following morning. PA/KMIS can organize the mechanics of this. - the answers are collected using talking head video clips (15 mins) - could extract blog postings from some of these. - Answers don't go back to plenary - people find them later.
Timetable: 1400 – regroup and intro the process (the scenario, the process, the outputs) 1405 – group forming 1410 – groups start discussing 1430 – questions collected in plenary and quickly assigned to experts (who join a table). 1440 – answer sessions start with the experts as resource persons 1500 – collect/document the questions and answers [they are not shared back in plenary, would take too long. But will be accessible later] break
